This was an O.K. article. It gets the word out about the 4,000 footers and may do a bit to help New Hampshire's tourism economy. In general, I am not a big Marty Basch fan. When he does articles about particular hikes, he tends to miss key points of interest, and some of what he says clearly reflects a lack of knowledge (or interest?) in Leave No Trace principles. Not really an issue in this article, though.

OK article, but Osceola, "one of the best hikes for alpine drama?"

Sure, it's a fantastic summit view with a big cliff but how about something above treeline for "alpine" drama? Mt. Adams? Now there's alpine drama!!

My 2 cents.

Yup, to say Isolation has "several stream crossings" is a bit of an understatement, but it's nice to see our recreational pursuit getting positive press (for a change from rescue cost articles/commentary).

Ok, I am a Marty Basch fan; I have been reading his ski columns in the Boston Globe for years. He is also editor for Windswept, the Mount Washington Observatory's quarterly journal. Nice article on the NH4s, I say. Now, the other Marty, the Obsy's summit cat, is a bit aloof, in my opinion.

Hopefully you don't think the the other other Marty is aloof, too. ;)

This would have been a good opportunity for him to interject some info about the importance of "hiking safe" and include a few basic recommendations.

Amen, amen.

Oh, I don't know. The guy I saw trying to negotiate the icy sections in Hush Puppies was providing plenty of alpine drama

Curious how many times the Globe has run an article similar to this. In the mid-90's they did one, and both my mother and I were interviewed (amongst a few others).

Perhaps one amongst us should write a letter to the editor along with a few brief suggestions in that regard ... mohamed is a good candidate for both his writing skills and credibility as past editor of the accidents section.
