Hikin' the scree on Shasta....
was at a party this past weekend and got talking to a guy who said his friend (both non-hikers) took a 4 wheeler up washington and was certain it wasn't the auto-road - said the guy paid someone 10 bucks to do this. I can't see how this is possible - the only thing even close would be maybe gettting one up tucks to hermit lake or the hunt fire road. but I am not that familiar with atv''s so not sure what they can/can't do. Not looking for an enviro debate here - I told the guy I would ask around for him - thats all.

anyone ever hear of this??

Another myth in the making Giggy . Not a chance it would happnen . It is not possible at all. Just the Terrian it self makes it impossibve unless they some how illegally got onto the Privatley owned Auto Road. But then the State park Guys and the Auto Road owners would have called the NH State Police . It wouild not be even remotley possible to drive a ATV up the Tuckerman Ravine trail . And Paying $10 just ot use te Auto road with a ATV would mean they guy did it for a loss a he would have to pay for fule as well . I would imagine a ATV owner would charge more and I think the folks that own the Auto road would want a cut on the action if people were drive a paing customer up the road .

There is a some sort of 4x4 trip you can take in the winter to bout 4,000 weater permitting . But I would think it cost much more trhan $10 .

Have you hiked it in the winter, it's smooth and the park people take the snowmobile/cat up it all the time.

It very well could have been ON the auto road.

A couple years ago SWMBO, Brother-in-law, his wife and I ( the other three non-hikers) took the Cog up Wash and there was a pack of ATVs in the parking lot at the summit. Don't know if it was a special ATV day or what, but there was a dozen + there and they didn't look like FS or any other gov agency.

I saw ~15 ATVs!

Last time I was on Mt. W, there was a rally of ATVs up there. But I am sure that they went up the Toll Rd. This was in the summer.
