Just a heads up to anyone interested in this sort of thing...
With Google News (www.news.google.com), you can now customize news feeds and sign yourself up for news on specific topics. There's a great one for hiking & backpacking that will show you everything in the news across the country related to this topic.
There's also a great separate group for skiing news, mountain biking news, national park news, etc.
A warning though - much of the news is grim (i.e. deaths, accidents, etc.).
