trails: carlo col trail, goose eye trail

conditions: success pond road is plowed all the way to the trailhead and beyond. packed snow in the morning, but a bit more sloppy on the way out. melting down to gravel in spots. dug out a spot to park just big enough to get completely off the road. higher clearance all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicles shouldn't have a problem. passenger cars may be pushing it in spots, but probably doable. the trails were untracked, but now broken out nicely. the snow was wet and anywhere from a few inches to a foot deep often over a hard base with some ice underneath in spots. the final steep pitch to the summit was a little tricky due to ice, but was not a problem with a bit of caution. crusted snow on the summit cone. the couple of water crossings near the start of the goose eye trail were well frozen and buried.

equipment: we wore snowshoes to the summit and a mix of snowshoes and crampons down the steep upper section then snowshoes back to the trailhead. crampons are worth carrying for the final pitch, but it could be negotiated ok in snowshoes today.

comments: quite nice to find success pond road drivable all the way to the trailhead. a bit warm in the woods with wet heavy snow. breezy and cool on the summit with great views in all directions. thanks to tom and pat for a great hike.
