Goose Eye and Mt. Carlo Loop from Success Pond Road via Goose Eye, AT and Carlo Col trails, June 23, 2012.
Goose Eye trail was dry, water crossings minimal. All slabs and scrambles were dry as well, though parts of the Col had a few muddy spots. Carlo Col trail was quite muddy near the brook and other lower spots.
Special equipment needed: sunblock today. It started out hot and sunny for the climb (!) but weather cooled as the storms came in, with a nice bug discouraging breeze on the descent.
Our lunch at the summit of Goose Eye was cut short as the thunder rumbled and skies darkened. The storms chased us like a bounty hunter but somehow we were able to outrun them. Rain started just as we were opening our car doors back at the trailhead.
We had the trail mostly to ourselves; met two backpackers on Carlo Col trail heading up to the shelter.
Success Pond Road from Berlin is bumpy but doable for any passenger vehicle. There are two torn culvert pipes on the side in the road in the first mile or so from Hutchins Street that must be avoided (which is easy as the road is fairly wide). Trailhead parking lot is approximately 8.1 miles from the Hutchins Street turnoff on the right; there's a sign. At one intersection there's a sign ahead on the left "Mile Marker 5," which will keep you going in the right direction.
