trails: logging roads, bushwhack, herd path, atv trail
conditions: we left one car at a closed gate about 1.5 miles up washburn road from rt. 3. we then drove back to brown road via meriden hill road from rt. 3 in columbia taking a spur road off brown road where it makes a sharp right turn downhill. we drove in this road about .2 miles or so. with high clearance one could drive all the way to the gate with a sign for the bunnell preserve, but it wasn't worth attempting with my car to save a few tenths. from the gate we continued up the road with good footing and an occasional dusting of snow. farther in the road was wetter, but partially frozen and the snow cover increased to an inch or so. we continued to follow roads up the west side of gore until they petered out then bushwhacked up through a mix of open and scrappy snow covered woods to the summit. from there we followed the ridgeline over to blue with mostly good woods and numerous moose paths. leaving blue we walked west shortly picking up an old road and followed it north keeping a north/northwest bearing at numerous junctions. at one point we followed a herd path for a distance before picking up a wide road that brought us down to cleveland notch. the atv path we were looking for was right in front of us across the road that runs through the notch and we picked it up and headed up north blue. the atv track slowly deteriorated and we then followed moose paths the rest of the way to the summit. dropping back to the notch we walked down the main road running west and followed it back down to the gate where we spotted a vehicle earlier in the day.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: a great day up north. it stayed pretty cool all day with high cloud and a bit of sun early. snow on the trees made the going a bit cold and wet at times. lots of moose sign along the ridge between gore and blue and we spooked one near the col. some good views along the various logging roads. cleveland notch was a pretty neat place. thanks to jeremy and amy for a nice hike.
