Date of Hike: 6/26/10 - 6/27/10
Trail Conditions: We did the trail south to north.
Day 1: Trail was great all the way up to Sunday River Whitecap, slightly rocky going down, then very gentle all the way to Slide Mountain campsite, and gentle again on to the newer Bull Run campsite, where we stayed. Note: Bull Run lacks a bear box, in spite of there being bear poo and prints everywhere around that area. We hung our food and had no problem. Note, the only blowdown we encountered all weekend was on the path to this campsite, across the stone steps.
Day 2, trail up Old Speck was wonderful, graded, even switchbacked, and not eroded yet so soft on the feet. Old Speck summit a bit buggy. Trail down to Speck pond was it's steep, rocky self, but nothing of note. Trail up Mahoosuc Arm was easier, again nothing of note. Trail down Old Speck to Rt. 26 is fine.
Special Equipment Required: Standard backpacking gear, and a rope/bag system if staying at Bull Run, due to the lack of bear box and abundance of bear signs. I had deet and never used it, but it might have been useful for some people.
Comments: What a wonderful backpacking trip! Lots of solitude to be had prior to Old Speck, we saw just one other couple near Sargent Brook on day 1. The campsites are nice and the trail is in great shape!
