I know it is a little early and to some blasphemy to ask a summer question when winter just started but here goes. How easy is it to get into one of the RMC cabins in June/July? I will be up in New England for about 3 weeks during that time frame and plan on hiking the northern Presies with my oldest (11yrs) daughter during my stay.

My schedule will be very flexible and will be more based on weather more then anything. I will also try to avoid Friday and Saturday night.

Thank you,

ps When did the AMC turn Carter Notch Hut to full service for the summer months?

During the week it's not really a problem. With the cabins only .4 miles apart if one happens to be full you can easily get to the other one. There's not often full in the summer weekdays. I much prefer Crag in the summer since it's more open and the view is better.

Carter will go to full service this summer. For the past 10 years it's been caretaker year round, and had the lowest occupancy of any of the huts. It'll still be caretaker for fall, winter, and spring.

All good points...
I would add that an early start almost always gets you a spot at Crag/Grey Knob - if you get there early to mid afternoon I doubt you would have a problem...it can get dicier in the evening.
