trails: peabody brook trail, great falls spur, bald cap peak ledges spur, mahoosuc trail, mascot pond spur
conditions: hogan road a bit rough in places end to end. ok in a car with care, not a problem with higher clearance. lower trails were leaf covered with lower mahoosuc trail being particularly muddy in places. higher up there was a coating of wet snow generally an inch to two with little ice. a number of unfrozen muddy wallows to navigate. spur to baldcap ledges showed recent blowdown maintenance and was freshly and well marked. some sections of dry ledge on cascade and hayes mixed with wet and slush covered ledge that required care. we limbed and removed some blowdown, but a couple substantial step/climb overs remain on the ridge. the trail coming down from hayes seemed substantially eroded in long stretches. water crossings were minor and not a problem.
equipment: light traction may have been helpful at times, but we barebooted the whole day.
comments: nice day in the southern mahoosucs. numerous viewpoints punctuated with a beautiful sunset from the ledges on mt. hayes. conditions on the ground made the going a bit slow, but never too bad. nice to get out and visit some new terrain. thanks to jeremy for a good hike.
