Mtn: Green Mountain in Effingham via trail from Lakeview Neurorehabilitation Center.
Date of Hike: Sunday, December 30, 2007
Trail Conditions: Hard packed snow covered by a 2" layer of powder that was then covered with a hard crispy crust.
Special Equipment Required: Carried FWG, used snowshoes the whole way, didn't need crampons.
Comments: This 1.4 mile hike to the Green Mountain firetower was a pleasant way to spend the day before we get another foot of snow. It didn't appear that anyone had been on the trail since the last snowstorm, so we beat down a path with our snowshoes following the groove of snowshoers who had hiked before the last (Thursday's) storm. The steps up the firetower were very icy! We hung around on the summit until 4:30. This was a good introduction to night snowshoeing for my 12 year old!
