Is there always a caretaker at Grey Knob? I'm planning a trip for Jan 3-5, Mon-Wed. There probably won't be many people up there during the middle of the week, you think?
David Metsky said:No reservations allowed, it's first come first served. Gray Knob is the most popular in winter since it is the only insulated cabin. On popular weeknds it will fill up, though they are pretty good at trying to cram a few extras in when needed. Overflow usually goes to Crag Camp which can get quite cold and windblown inside, but still fairly comfortable. The Perch and Log Cabin are shelters, with 4 tent platforms at the Perch. They rarely fill up in winter.

When Gray Knob is truely full they will send folks over to Crag Camp. It doesn't happen often but it will happen, Crag has enough space to cover any eventuality.giggy said:I have yet to see that happen and had "unofficially heard" they never turn people back. Take that for what is worth and never guareentee it - but thats what I heard. I usually stay in grey knob but have stayed in crag - I don't remember it getting that cold. I think when it was rebuilt a few years back - it was made windproof? Not sure on that though.
