Date of Hike: Dec. 8-9
Trail conditions: All trails had about three to five inches of fluffy snow... it was kind of cruddy to walk on... didn't provide much traction or fill in the holes around the rocks very well. Lowe's Path well trodden and barebootable to Log Cabin. We tried crampons on the steep bit above the Log Cabin but there wasn't enough ice... probably would be best with lighter duty traction as it was slippery in spots. We switched to snowshoes and kept them on until Grey Knob, which worked better but wasn't totally necessary.
We broke out Hincks this morning and found snowshoes extremely helpful for the trailbreaking and for King Ravine. Barebooted back down Lowe's.
Special Equipment Required: Lighter duty traction would be helpful... snowshoes.
Comments: HikerBob and I had hoped to summit Adams and Sam Adams this morning but the forecast this morning called for 50-70 mph wind and windchills of -30... a little too much for me. I had a zero degree sleeping bag but it wasn't quite warm enough for Grey Knob. A nice little loop despite the lack of summits for us.
Pictures here if you're interested.
