Anyone ever hike up Gulf Of Mexico Brook towards Graham (Catskills)?
It's likely to be my next hike towards the end of the summer. Also concerned with the stinging nettles. I'm sure they'll be out in full effect.
Any thoughts, comments,... appreciated.

Oh yeah, anyone ever hike the Bullet Hole? What's with the name? Anything of special interest up there.

Thanks.

I have never hiked up the Gulf of Mexico brook. According to Michael Kudish's book, "The Catskill Forest, A History", there is an old road (built before 1875, abandoned before 1901, but recently used at the lower elevations as a logging road) that goes up the valley of the Gulf of Mexico Brook. It reaches the ridge east of the 3480' east summit of Schoolhouse Mt. opposite Turner Hollow. The book states that it is difficult to follow at the height of land, but is easy to follow at lower elevations. I never saw this old road on the several times I have climbed Graham, but I never looked for it either. It was at one time part of the Turner Hollow Turnpike before it was rerouted to the west side of the 3440' west summit of Schoolhouse Mt (the current blue, Dry Brook Ridge Trail that comes up from Balsam Lake). The two summits of Schoolhouse Mt. (actually false summits of Balsam Lake Mt) are not labeled on the current maps.

The stinging nettles are out in the Catskills. They don't seem as bad as last year, but bad enough.

Are you asking about the Bullet Hole brook (western feeder of Tremper Kill) south of Andes, NY in Delaware County? I believe that name may be related to the Anti Rent Wars, and the death of undersheriff Osman Steele, August 7, 1845, which occurred on Dingle Hill, just opposite the Bullet Hole brook. I have driven by there several times. The land appears to be all privately owned so I have never hiked there. Or is there another Bullet Hole in the Catskills?

OK OK I spotted the Bullet Hole you are asking about. It is a 2920' false summit (or the 2860' notch between this summit and the rest of the Beaver Kill Range). It is just north of the Dog Hollow and south of the Beaver Kill. The Bullet Hole is not labeled on the NY/NJ trail conference maps, but is on the USGS quad and on map in the AMC Catskill Mountain Guide, by Peter Kick. The AMC guide book mentions that the private land enclave to the southeast is leased to a hunting club. Maybe that has a connection to the name Bullet Hole. Or perhaps from some nearby mountain the notch resembles a bullet hole in the ridge.

The AMC guide book mentions that the Neversink Hardenburgh (NH) trail crosses a road just east of the Gulf of Mexico brook and west of the Vly Pond outlet. Michael Kudish's book mentions that the recent logging road (circa 1995) follows the Gulf of Mexico brook through a narrow strip of private land (probably the eastern of the two strips shown on the trail maps). It sounds like these two roads are the same, and you should be able to follow it all the way up to the old ridge road that goes to Graham. You might have an entirely trail route - if that is what you want. It also brings up the subject of permission to hike Graham which is still owned by the descendents of Jay Gould, the famous railroad baron. Permission to hike Graham may be obtained from the caretaker, William J Scholl, Dry Brk Rd, Arkville, NY 12406, 845-586-4056. He would also be able to advise you whether the Gould family owns that strip of land containing the logging road.

Chris,

Keep me posted on the trip if you would. I'm pretty busy with plans through summer, but depending upon the weekend I'm interested. I've been looking at that route up Graham for a while now looks like fun.

Mark,
Thanks a lot. I think you've helped me out before with that book when I was going to do Rusk. I'll keep a look out for the road. I have no particular preference (aside from solitude) for trail/bushwack - as long as the nettles are at a minimum. I hate nettles. Didn't think that logging road were still being established - must have somehting to do with the private property, right?

Warren - I'll keep you posted on my plans.
