We bushwhacked the usual route from off of 42 where the lower elevations had mixed terrain with some patches of light snow, hard ice, and exposed rock. We stayed with crampons the whole trip, however, one could have used snowshoes higher up on the mountain. I think crampons were a solid choice due to the hidden hard ice under the snow in some spots.
Also the log book in the Canister on the summit was completely full so if you plan to go up Halcott anytime soon I would suggest bringing a small pad to donate.
