Last Sat. Jay picked me up at Willowbrook Mall in NJ at 8AM and then drove to the Catskills where we met Matt Corsar(mcorsar) at the parking area east of Halcott. It was a beautiful sunny day but cold in the AM and got a bit of a chill putting on my gear outside of the car. I wasn't feeling well Sat. as I had played a gig the night before and only got about 3 hours of sleep before I had to get up and catch the bus.

Once we got into woods the clean air, sun, and exercise did me well and soon I felt better, pleased with my decision to get out on a gorgeous winter weekend. Jay led as usual, being a younger and faster hiker than I am, with Matt going back and forth between us in pace. It turns out that Matt is a guitarist as well as me, so a lot of the hike was spent discussing music and other guitar players.

It didn't take us long to reach the summit, after which we did a bit of a loop hike, taking a slightly different route back to the car. My only regrets were that I left my snowshoes in the car which I could have used on some of the north facing parts of the mountain. Instead I brought crampons, which I ended up not using, oh well...... All in all it was a nice, half day hike in the woods. It was nice to meet Matt and hope to hike with him again soon, maybe start on some of those Catskill 100 trips Jay and I have been talking about......

After the hike Jay and I went to Phoenicia, where we were tourists for an hour before meeting Al (ajtiv) for dinner at Brios. It was good to see Al again and dinner went down great with our hiker talk after spending the day in the cold.

It was good meeting you as well, Fred, and I also enjoyed the hike and music/guitar player discussion. Did you guys realize we talked for almost an hour at the cars after the hike?! I'm glad the hike helped you shake off some of your ill feeling. Halcott is a good one to explore and kind of improvise a route on. My gig in Fleischmanns went well Saturday night (lots of Bellayre ski-folk eating, drinking and spending $$$), as did the Doubletop hike Sunday. It looks like you guys also did well in VT w/ Dr. Wu. Nice accomodations at that Thruway rest stop, huh?

Anyhow, keep me informed of your Catskill plans, especially for the next few weeks. I'm looking to tag a few more winter peaks, and if memory serves, I need most or all of the ones you're still after. Vly/Bearpen would be fun, and I think you also mentioned Fir from the road? Maybe w/ Hemlock and Spruce?
This Sunday I may be hiking Lone/Rocky w/ the Club, and I haven't decided about Saturday yet.

Matt
