After some reading of the old thread and a few private correspondences, we set out with Chip for the FWT on Hale, after an abortive attempt last winter. Our starting point was the end of Little River Road, and we encountered no difficulties in parking, crossing the bridge (the approach to which has been washed out), and starting up the old rail bed. We made it up to the Summer trail head in good time, and headed up the trail. It was a little icy, but we bare booted for a little while longer. At the appointed time/place we began searching for the FWT. It turned out to be a piece of cake. Why we never saw it before is a mystery. The trail was very easy to follow, especially since it was already trodden by a few previous visitors. We put on micro spikes around here and left them on for most of the hike.
The ascent is moderately steep, and after 2 hours of climbing we were at the top. There were a few views near the top, but it was cloudy and foggy off and on. The fir trees were 'raining' on us up high, but at the summit it was just some blowing fog. Another group came up from the Hale Brook trail and met us we were just about to leave. The walk down was quick, in a little more than an hour we were back on the trail. After another hour plus we were back at the car.
Total time: 5:30, Elevation gain: about 2500'
This makes 23 of 48 in the Winter for Laurie and me.
