trails: hancock notch trail
conditions: everything was quite wet today. the trail had mud in the usual spots up to the cedar brook junction. beyond was in good shape too with some slippery roots and rocks and a few particularly muddy spots after the initial climb. i removed all but one larger birch blowdown that is easily stepped over. will need something more aggressive for that one. drainage ditches were in surprisingly good shape and after doing some brushing this past winter the corridor looked pretty open too. water crossings were up a bit today, but not a problem. a snag in one of the smaller crossings up in the notch has collected enough debris to slow waterflow and cover the usual stepping stones, but there is another just upstream that works well.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: given the forecast it seemed like a good day to do a spring work trip on the hancock notch trail. started out in the rain, but it soon relented and didn't rain for the rest of the time i was out. having done a late fall clean up and some brushing in january i actually didn't have too much to do other than remove some blowdown and some light servicing of drainages. some more extensive footbed work could ultimately be beneficial in places long term. hancock notch was quiet and beautiful as it always is. i could just make out the talus slopes on huntington below the cloud ceiling. good to be out.
