Date of Hike: 3/6/10
Hancock Notch Trail: Soft pack. Postholed. Many blowdowns.
From the white mountain guide, "...swinging right slightly uphill 1.5 mi. to enter a logging road at the point where the railroad grade crossed the river; take care not to follow the remains of the railroad grade across the river here."
Many (including myself) did not heed the guide warning. I ended up following a set of tracks that lead up the brook that runs parallel to the Cedar Brook Trail.
Cedar Brook Trail: Soft pack. Postholed. Some blowdowns. Easy to follow.
Hancock Loop Trail: Hard pack. Some postholes. A few blowdows.
North link: take care on the North link to follow the trail unless you want to ascend the slide (which I did). The bushwack at the top is unpleasant. There is at least one set of snowshoe tracks coming down (mine) the trail. I recommend the trail.
South link is not broken out.
Ridge link: Hard pack. Some blowdowns. Hard to follow on the final ascent to the summit. Many "false" trails including some I made. Trail has fresh blazes, but I still found it difficult to follow not having been on the trail for several years. I came back instead of descending the South link since I did not want to continue bushwacking.
Special Equipment Required: Wore snowshoes all day.
Comments: The trails are postholed now. The warm conditions have and will continue to soften the snow pack.
