North and South Hancock (Clockwise) via Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook and Hancock Loop, 9.8 miles, 2650'

BikeHikeSkiFish (Tim), Rob L.

Date of Hike: 10-Mar-2008

Trail Conditions: Boilerplate crust all the way around. Some very light powder, 1/2-3" on top. Lots of spruce fragments, encased in ice and otherwise scattered about. Many small blowdowns, a few larger ones. Occasionally, crawling on hands and knees was required.

NOTE: The parking lot is full of deep, rutted ice. There are only 2-3 sedan-friendly spots.

Special Equipment Required: Barebooted to the loop junction, crampons (me) or snowshoes (Rob) for traction on the loop. While some traction highly advisable, you could leave the snowshoes home. With all the little sticks and branches down from ice and winds, we opted not to buttslide :(

Comments: Overcast, limited views, Carrigain in the clouds, stream crossings easy (only 2 were at all interesting, the rest had intact snow bridges or were easily hopped)

Round trip time: 6:00
