Date of Hike: 7/13/2013
Trail Conditions: overall the trails are in great shape, in spite of what seems likea lot of traffic (i passed about 20 people going up the South peak as i was coming down). i dont know who the adopters and/or maintainers Re, but theyve done a great job! There is one kind of wet section along the Cedar Brook Trail. It's pretty minor and probably more hangover from all this rain than major crisis; the trail is widening around a coup,e of the mud puddles, though. In the sag between North and South is another boggy section where they've dumped a bunch of lumber for future bog bridges. For now it looks like the bridges were designed and built by Picasso!
Special Equipment Required: as usual when climbing 4000'ers, I brought along Smith and Divkerman's "The 4000-Footers of the White Mountains." The geography section is great, but the "view guide"section in particular makes this book a must-buy and must-carry: without it I'd only have enable to identify the big ones (Chocorua, Passaconaway, Whiteface, Osceolas, Moosilauke...); thanks Steve and Mike for filling in all the gaps!
Comments: This is a great half-day lollipop with a very challenging 3/4 mile climb and wonderful southerly views from the north summit. The lot was empty when I started (8:30) and overflowing when I returned (1:00).
