2nd time was the trick - more traffic since our attempt last week, Phelps trail was nicely broken to State Range & Haystack, and we re-broke Haystack to Basin, and over to Saddleback. Mostly bare rock on Haystack and the Saddleback cliffs, but still some very icy spots whre a slip could be disaster - crampons & snowshoes essential, stabilicers would be nice. From Saddleback down Orebed Brook was well-trampled, although we had to try to smooth over the "bare-booting" mess from Saddleback down. Very well trodden from the base of the Saddleback slide to JBL as of yesterday.
