Has anyone successfully walked through from the west branch of Haystack Road to the old road that branches off the east side of the Gale River Road? The AMC map shows this as going through; Google Maps shows it as disconnected and the satellite view looks pretty thick for maybe a quarter mile. I've been up a little ways from the Gale River side (following Mohamed's Peak Above the Nubble directions).

I'm not looking for winter conditions; just thinking of combining Garfield and the Twins this summer and thinking this would be more fun than going all the way back out to 3. The thought would be to park at the North Twin trailhead and do the roadwalk first since it's perhaps the riskiest part of the trip.

We've run it a few times - nice hard trail to the height of land then get's overgrown a bit in places - hidden rocks, wet spots, but an easy to follow wide trail since it is a snowmobile trail in Winter.

Thanks to both. Sounds just about perfect, actually; by my figures that would make Garfield + Twins a nice round twenty miles. Mohamed, I suspect you're right that it won't save time, but it should be more fun to run than the highway. My trail shoes are death for pavement running, anyway.

For that combination of peaks, I would park at Gale River Trailhead and climb Twins from there, coming down from Garfield turn R on the snowmobile trail and that does save you maybe a mile
