Conditions: No snow at the trail head. Snow and ice started about 1700' on the west side loop. The snow was never over 1" deep but the ice became a major factor near the top. The ledges at the top were covered with ice and the dusting of snow made it difficult to know just where the ice was. The ledges at the top were dicey to say the least. On the east side of loop the southerly facing ledges were mostly bare. The snow continued farther down on the east side. The junction with the east side trail and the X country trail very wet. There were twelve or more downed trees on the loop but they were all easily stepped over.
Special equipment: I barebooted the whole way but Stableicers or Yaxtrax might have been used on the ledges. Snowshoes and crampons could not have been used.
Comments: Lauky and I were actually heading for Tecumseh. However, the temperature dropped from 31* in Conway to 18* at the top of the Kanc pass. At that rate I guessed that it would be about 10* at 4000' and I didn't think Lauky was ready for that so we made a U-turn at the top and headed back to the Downsbrook parking area. I did some some fancy butt sliding down some of the ledges coming down off the top. Otherwise it was a beautiful day with great views and temps in the mid 20s.
