After breaking camp in New Jersey, the girls and I headed down to Delaware.

The highpoint of this flat state is not far from I-95 and just over the Delaware-Pennsylvania border. It's located in an attractive residential neighborhood.

We parked in front of a house and walked the few dozen feet toward the sign.

As we approached, a woman appeared on the other side of the street and asked if we were highpointers. When I answered in the affirmative, she introduced herself as Doreen, keeper of the register. She was very nice and told us all about the history of the area. She allowed me to take her picture by the sign (which has been moved in recent years, it was once across the street from where it now stands).

The marker is by the sidewalk not far from the sign, on the same side of the street.

The sidewalk is actually cut away from the marker.

The actual highpoint is in the middle of the street between the sign and where we parked our car.

After Doreen had gone back inside, I took both girls' hands and, after looking both ways, ran across the middle of the street. I'm pretty sure we ran over the actual "peak."

Down the road from the highpoint lies the PA-DE boundary. The girls made sure to put a foot in each state before we left.

No campground afterward -- Grandmom and Granddad live not too far away. We crashed at their place, much to the girls' delight.

Next stop: Pennsylvania.

I spent many years living about 7 miles from the Ebright Azimuth, the highest point in DE. As I recall it, FL is the only other State which has a highpoint that is lower than the one in DE. It's no wonder I suffered from "altitude sickness" when I moved to NH!;):D

Best wishes to you on your highpointing adventures!

It's so awesome that you are doing this with your girls. They will always treasure this. How far west are you headed on this particular adventure? Let me know if you need suggestions on cool things to see along the way (my name is roadtripper, after all :D).

For example - have you seen this book & website before? It has awesome local places to eat along the backroads of America: www.roadfood.com

Hi John, did you ever visit the DE highpoint? The area takes pride in it, which is nice. Yes, Florida was extremely flat. We did that one a couple of days ago, it was a nice little raised area off the side of the road. :)

Hi roadtripper, we hope to do all the highpoints east of Colorado. The girls are a bit nervous about going through tornado territory, though. They don't like the large flat bits of land all that much. I bought a weather alert radio (receives all NOAA channels), that made them feel a bit better. Now at least we'll know if there's nasty weather we should be aware of.

Love the book suggestion, thanks!
