Dave & I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who responded to my Camping in New Jersey questions a couple of weeks ago. We both absolutely loved Sawmill Campsite (even though we reserved too late to get a campsite on the lake) and had a great, relaxing time on our quest to reach our 15th state highpoint.

The campsites were terrific -- very secluded so I still felt like we were out in the woods, even though we were only car camping this weekend. We even woke up Saturday morning to find a deer foraging in the woods near our tent! We managed to see so much wildlife on this trip, including the deer, hares, ducks, snails and tons of wildflowers, probably because I wasn’t so focused on my hiking pace.

Based on Shawn’s suggestions, we ended up hiking to the highpoint from the campsite, heading down the Blue Dot Trail to the Appalachian Trail over to the monument itself, where we posed for the required pictures. We had been to the New Jersey highpoint a couple of years ago, but the park was closed due to an ice storm so we were turned back just a few miles shy. While the monument is closed off for repairs, we figured we were close enough this time to count it as a done deal.

With the highpointing out of the way, we spent the rest of the day wandering some of the trails around the park and gorging ourselves on wild blueberries until our hands were purple and relaxing by the lake. All and all a fantastic trip & thanks everyone (especially Shawn) for setting me off in the right direction while I was planning this trip.

when I was about 11 or 12, my cousin and I went to stay with my grandfather in NJ for a week. One day he was going to take us to Highpoint. I remember him telling us how we were going to the highest point in the state, blah blah blah. He was all happy. Then we asked him how high it was. When he told us, our reply was "is that all? where we live is almost that high." Needless to say, he was no longer happy, and I think we went somewhere else instead.

Great story Steve! I'll admit NJ at 1,800 feet, pales in comparison to some of the other state highpoints we've done. (But then, it's better than Delaware's highpoint in the middle of a road.)

I'm glad we had to go back to NJ for a second time in order to get this highpoint. It brought us back to the area for a much longer trip and we were surprised how much we enjoyed the area.

Glad you had a good time. I think I was working the night shift when you were there. Too bad I did not get to meet you. Just think people think of NJ as the armpit. They always think of the NJ turnpike and Newark and forget about the rest. Glad I was able to help
