My family has rented a cottage on Embden Pond for the first week of July this summer and I'm trying to figure out some hiking possibilities. I'd like to sneak away a couple of times and get in 1/2 day hikes so as to not completely abandon the family. (Trailhead at dawn back by early afternoon sort of thing). The location is about an hour from Carrabassett which seems like a likely location. Seems like poor road access to many of the surrounding mountains. Haven't hiked in this part of Maine before so we're completely open to suggestions. We've done quite a bit of mountain hiking in the Whites the last few years and are in good condition so something with some physical challenge is welcome. Thanks for your input...

Mount Abraham is just shy of an hour away. It's an hour fifteen to the AT crossing of Maine 27. Head south from there and it will take you over both Crockers. They're not as nice as Abraham IIRC. Weld is about an hour and a half. Mount Blue, Tumbledown, and Little Jackson are all nice hikes, but only Tumbledown has big views.
