Oh My !

I've decided the risk of making this great area more popular by posting a trip report is minimal since you either already know about it or probably won't care about it. It's also a freakin' steep hike in and out, so the faint should avoid the area altogether.

The main reason I wanted to post this brief report is to thank our own Percious for inviting me to join him and his young son, Colden, for a weekend backpacking/climbing/swimming/fishing adventure in the southern Adirondacks.

After hedging my bets due to the (thankfully incorrect) weather forecast, I took up the invite and met Percious and Colden at the trailhead with my younger son, Ben, at 8:30 Saturday morning. A young couple coming in from RI, friends of Percious', would catch up with us later during our morning climb.

We were loaded for a comfortable camp-out and climbing with kids so, thankfully, the steep rocky trail was short to our first climb location. We dropped packs and scrambled a distance to the top of a long slab climb. Percious was in charge and we soon accomplished two pitches in a self belayed, double rappel ( I think that's how you'd describe it); he with his son and me with mine. That was exciting, but safe and well set-up. We thought we heard voices (not Angels') during the rappels and by the time we reached the bottom Percious's friends had found us. We spent the next couple hours on 2 ropes taking turns climbing and belaying. Everyone, including the boys, did well. By about 2:30 we decided to retrieve the packs and head out to set up camp. This was another short and rocky hike to the shoulder of the mountain where a beautiful alpine lake reveals itself. We located a site across the trail from the lake where we could pitch 3 tents. Soon set-up, we made for the swim suits and fishing poles to take advantage of everything the area has to offer. Cooled and rinsed off, sans fish, but none the worse for wear it was now time to cook and eat. Campfire Smores and starlight came soon after.

The next morning brought a relatively slow start that eventually lead to packing up and heading for the summit and the afternoon's climb. This was a, I'm not sure, 5.5/5.6 vertical, semi-chimney climb that we all enjoyed and again all did pretty well with. Thanks again to Percious for leading and setting the Bomb Proof anchors. By the time we cleaned up and hiked out the (freakin steep rocky, not for the faint or weak) trail to the trail head it was 4pm. We shared left over chocolate and soon headed our separate ways.

An excellent weekend with an great group of people.

Some pics are in my photo link. Thanks for looking.

The rappel's we did are "dual" rappels where one person manages the rappel device while both climbers are hooked to it. The person managing the device is connected to the device at a shorter distance than the second. We did "double length" rappels by connecting our two 60M ropes together. It took 2 rappels to get to the bottom of the cliff. Stout trees were used for our anchors.

The climb we did near the summit was 100 yards left of the "big ladder" and was called Chicken Flakes. Bring a big cam for this one (#5 Clamalot)! 5.7/5.8. Without a big piece it is R. I had to run it out through the crux, but I thankfully did not fall. Be careful, because it looks as if one of the large flakes might come off in your hand and nail your belayer. Chickens should go find something else to climb.

I might add that we put the kids through a ton of alpine "abuse" this weekend, and they both did really well. Colden hiked the 2+ miles of treacherous terrain on day 2 entirely in his crocs. Wow!

Looks like you guys successfully combined many activities into one weekend - an outdoor activity success!!

I'm guessing since there was some beta and wasn't an FA, was this a known crag/area in the ADKs?

If you have Don Mellor's book, you have "some" information. I have looked at the route descriptions like 10x and I STILL don't know what the heck we climbed the first day. All I can say is 5.easy.
