I have had a Suunto Ambit 3 for the past 8 years and am thinking of getting a new watch. For hikes I use my watch to display distance hiked and altitude. I use my iPhone with Avenza Maps to track my progress. I create my routes on Caltopo. I have been looking at the Suunto Race S as an upgrade that would display my progress right on the watch. I do not need all the race training options on the watch. The Apple Watch SE is much less expensive. Will it do all I need? The watch must be able to use GPS and not cellular data for tracking.

What I've read and the reason I haven't bought a watch is that even the watches with the largest screens are just not big enough for effectively mapping. This is just my impression from watching and reading reviews, but for now I'm sticking with my phone and a mapping app.
