Anyone know about how much snow is in the Catskills? A couple of us are going to SW Hunter tomorrow and wondering how much snow there is and whether we'll be wearing, carrying, or leaving the snowshoes in the trunk of the car.

Thanks

Snowfall this week was hit and miss, some areas got 4", others up to 12" of light fluffy stuff. Last weekend there was nothing below 3000' in most areas, above that 12+ hard crusty pack, which should make for a good base. Come prepared for anything. I was working in Hunter, Tannersville this week, about 6" in villages as of this afternoon.

Jay H and Harry K came down to New Paltz tonight for dinner after their hike and I met them for a beer. Today they did the Friday-Lone Range and back out over Table and Peekamoose. They said there was still at least a foot or so at the higher elevations.

I'm doing Twin/Indian Head tomorrow and I'm definitely bringing the MSRs just in case. I'm used to the weight at this point anyhow-it's almost like an extra external frame...

Good info. I will bring my snowshoes along on today's hike..

FWIW, there was 3" of snow tops on Windham High Peak Saturday 1/28/6. Most of the 11 people on our hike barebooted the entire hike.

Have fun. Was there about a month ago. Trail is beautiful. Came up from Spruceton Road. Snow was not bad. Snowshoes were helpful but might not have been necessarily necessary. :D
As you know, things are probobly different a month later.

Yup, HarryK and I did the bushwack range from Moon Haw to Peekamoose road in 9.5 hours, definitely snowshoable especially since we had to break trail to pretty much everything except for sporatic bareboot tracks going up Rocky from BC and some remnents of trails near Lone. Even going down on the LP to Peekamoose road was untracks and deep. Steep sides made for very slippery conditions with the soft snow even in snowshoes. We both barebooted on Freidel's property til about 2000ft or so and then put on snowshoes. Never took out the crampons...

A really fantastic day, views were spectacular!

Snow on Blackhead ranged from nothing to 18" in 1 tiny spot, the spot I stuck my boot in! :D

Mostly insignificant though.

Hey Jay! I got #627, and I was the first W35'er of the year! WOOHOO!!!!!

I followed Jay's tracks today as far as Rocky and then turned around. My wife put her snowshoes on around 2000 feet and I put mine on about 2500. It was raining when we left the summit of BC and rained the whole way down making for some very wet snow which is fading fast. Took shoes off at 2k on the way down. This was my wife's 33-35th! Rocky in the rain! She earned this one. Thanks for packing a trail from both me and Charlene. Made navigating in the rain a whole lot easier.

You're welcome Rik. I even was posting our times in the canister logs, except it would be from Moon Haw towards Table and I don't remember if I put a time in for Friday, although friday we had to do a little nautilus method of finding the canister. Rocky and Balsam Cap are somewhat obvious, probably more so going west and Lone we had to backtrack a little cause the canister is not far from the summit plateau/ridge that you hit coming from Rocky...

It was very tough going up on friday as the snow was sooo soft, we were sliding like Bode!
