Date Hiked: 1/26
Trail: Huckleberry point is a 1.5 mile (1 way) "side trip" off the Katterskill High Peak trail (coming from the south).
Required Equipment: Microspikes or equivalent traction aids.
Hiked this easy/moderate lower elevation trail this afternoon. 2-4" of fresh snow (+ drifts in spots) covering either bare ground or solid ice (depending on where). Snowshoes not needed at this point. Full crampons would be overkill, but no traction at all would be unwise due to patches of pure ice.
I've been hiking the Catskills for 16 years and this is my first visit to this incredible viewpoint. It is definitely worth taking the time to visit this location, even though it may not be on the way to anywhere or on any peakbagging list. Saw an incredible number of ice climbers out today near the trailhead and also at Kaaterskill falls area.
