Date of Hike: 07/29/2013
Trail Conditions: a real mixed bag: Ammo Ravine was a little sloppy and slippery here and there on the way up, and a river on the way back down. Came and Davis as far as Boott Spur were the usual beautiful rock hops. South of Boott Spur the Davis Path gets a little rugged and is lightly maintained, though the crews did a monumental job getting it back in shape after Irene.
Comments: This hike reminded me of skiing at King Ridge: "climbing" Isolation from Boott Sput consisted of dropping about 1700' in two miles through a rough and somewhat unkempt krumholtz tunnel most of the way, then a very short uphill to the summit (isn't it supposed to be 200' or something?). "Descending" meant a long two-mile slog back to Boott Spur; I glad I got through there before the deluge!
All in all it was a beautiful day out, with constantly changing scenery, weather, and lighting... And of course a brief torrential rain and a little thunder and lightning just to live things up.
As a rule I don't like out-and-backs, but I'd definitely recommend this. The only thing I might change is coming down via the AT SOBO to Edmands or NOBO to Jewell (down Ammo. Ravine in the rain is kind of a drag)... And I can't help thinking how cool it would be to follow the (closed) Isolation and Dry River Cut-Off Trails to Mizpah...
16 miles, 6000', 9 hrs.
