Date of Hike: Sun. 4-5-09

Trails: Rocky Branch, Engine Hill Bushwhack, Isolation, Davis Path.

We had an AMC group of ten today with Ed Hawkins, and Tom Davis as leaders. We started off wearing microspikes to the jct. of the ski trails, and from there we wore snowshoes for the rest of the day.

The snow was fairly firm this morning due to the cool temps, but soft off of the center of the trail so snow shoes worked great for us.

The bushwhack path is still there and it put us on the Isolation trail in good time. The snow bridges on the last three crossings are gone. We whacked up the east side to avoid the first two and was able to get across the last with little effort. We met three guys who had stayed overnight at the shelter and said that the bridges were out on the first two crossings below the bushwhack, but they were doable.

Davis path is still a tangle on branches in your face. Coming back the sun had really softened the snow. We postholed with snow shoes on during the trek back across the bushwhack, especially in the birch glades, where it gets plenty of direct sun. Snow shoes are a must for this hike.

The summit was in the clouds when we were there but once off, bright blue sky, and sun.

We saw a cow moose and her calf on the way back.

Fine day on the trail with a great group today.
