For you history buffs, there's an excellent article on the Cog Railroad in Wikipedia, with lots of pictures at the bottom. There's trivia also, like "when/where did the Ski train run" along with many other interesting (at least to me) facts. A good resource, and lots of effort much have been devoted to researching it.

Nice article. The only thing missing is that the Cog was once directly connected to the main rail lines at Fabyans? The grade and cuts now serve as part of the cross country ski trails at Bretton Woods. I have always wondered if some of the delegates of the1944 World Monetary Conference took a ride on the COG. That conference was a pretty big deal and reportedly had numerous flaws.

There's another article on Fabyan House which was originally a large hotel built on the same spot as the current restaurant. Another good article is Wikepedia's page on the Monetary Conference which lead to the IMF and World Bank. There were 730 delegates to that conference - my guess is that some would have taken a ride on the Cog, but it's only a guess.

it wasn't directly connected, but the branch line extended all the way to the base where passengers could transfer. The Monetary Conference delegates could not ride the cog as it was closed from 1943-1945 due to the war. Teague tried to assemble a skeleton crew to run some trains during the conference but nothing came of it. One writer joked that the only available attraction was the hotel bar, but I seem to remember reading that delegates went out on driving tours to the notches.
