Date of Hike: Sunday, 12/30/07
Trail Conditions: Trail well broken to, and through, the bushwack that cuts off the first four water crossings. My thanks to the pioneers of this bushwack, which is a more pleasant leg of trail, with less brush, than many higher up. The trail beyond the point where the bushwack rejoins the Isolation Trail was partly filled in due to high winds the previous night, and became increasingly difficult to follow. In a confused area near a "Revegetation Area" sign, which I recall from a previous (summer) hike is a bootleg camp site, I nearly lost the trail, but did manage to locate it as it continues to climb the east side of the brook. (Avoid the temptation to cross the brook here; it is a dead end.) The trail was completely drifted over from this point to the summit. At the campsite near the junction with the Davis Path, I lost the trail all together and had to bushwack until I intersected said path; my GPS is comforting in these situations.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes and poles. An extra pair of dry mittens. A head lamp. Many hours.
Comments: Wow, these trails could use some blazes! Locating them is detective work; look for clean cut limbs which are a dead giveaway of the edge of the trail. Great weather for this hike with outstanding views from the top. #33 on the winter list.
