trails: long trail, herd path, ski trail, jay loop
conditions: lots of parking at jay pass though i felt the fool when i arrived in the morning parking to the north of the trail crossing and briefly couldn't figure out where the trail went into the woods. i had a map that seemed to show it crossing a bit below the pass to the north which isn't the case. the long trail was generally dry and in great shape to the summit. the same as it followed the ski trail northbound until it headed back into the woods. the herd path to big jay departed to the left almost immediately after the lt hit the woods. it was slightly obscure and had some blowdown at first, but then quite clear and obvious with significant mud along the way in some of the sags until it ended on the summit in a small clearing. there is evidence of a canister being there in the past, but none currently though there is a large red ski patrol sled hanging from a tree at the end of the herd path that is hard to miss. on the return i used a ski trail to bypass the summit of jay peak and hit the lt where it re enters the woods. some mud on the loop that passes jay camp down low, but generally dry.
equipment: nothing in particular though navigational tools probably a good idea in case the herd path is lost.
comments: a decidedly long drive for a relatively short hike, but worth it today as it was beautiful up north. the breeze was fantastic and kept things quite comfortable. it was my first time on these peaks and i was surprised by all of the great views and scenery along the way. the final ascent to big jay must be awesome with a deep snow base. great to be out.
