I'm looking at bushwacking across from the Jay summit (sometimes referred to as East Jay) to Saddleback and then out to Jay Mtn Road (at the yellow cairn 2 miles east of the intersection with Styles Brook Rd). Can anyone tell me what the terrain is like in there? How long might the bushwack take?

Is it legal to park at the clearing a few feet east of the yellow marker on the south side of the road. Looks like there's space for 2-3 cars.

What's the terrain like between East Jay and Death Mtn? How long might a round trip take?

Thanks for your insights.

Cheers!

Not familiar with the "yellow markers" or the "Clearing" that you talk about, but you must go to just about the height of land adjacent to Frenyea in order to reach private land (right about -HERE- )

As for the traverse, as far as ADK bushwhacks go, it's pretty friendly. Mostly open woods. I've heard tell of a herd path between the two peaks, but we never found one. It didn't mater, is was good traveling. It's kind of a meandering ridge between the two and there are a bunch of little knobs and turns so just beware of where your heading, as you can get turned around in there (we did). Its not the standard point to point straight ridgewalk. Just something to be aware of.

As for time, I won't even venture to guess because with whacking, time can go way up or down based on mere feet in one direction or another between routes. It took us just under 7 hours for the whole route (in reverse).

Death itself is pretty open, but not sure about the terrain between the two. If I had to guess, I'd say it's say not bad. The Jay's are pretty known for it's friendlyness to whackers.
