The plan was to get Jefferson and Monroe and finish my winter 48. We went up the Jewell trail which was a solid super highway! It was packed with hikers. We wore spikes the whole way. Jefferson was in a cloud. We headed towards it as the wind was picking up and found a few more groups of hikers heading toward the summit. I think this was the most hikers I have ever seen going for a summit besides Washington. Nobody was turning back even as the whole ridge was getting socked in. I was too nervous to continue on down gulfside to Monroe. I couldn't see more than 30 or 40 feet in front of me!! We found the Jewell and headed back down. The conditions had deteriorated pretty bad since we came up it. It turned to mush. Brewster called that one correctly earlier. Mostly weather related. I hope it hardened back up for Sunday. But anyway. As of Saturday there really isn't a need for crampons up top. More rock than ice!! Spikes are enough. But to each his own. The saga of W48 to be continued.
