Jefferson and Washington: Trails: Jewell, Gulfslide, Great Gulf, Crawford Path, and Ammonoosuc

I met up with Dehydrator, SA, and HA at the Cog Railway Station. The Jewell Trail was a snowshoers dream. Packed powder and no post holes. We ran into Kevin Rooney and his group just before the tree line. After a pleasant chat we made our way to Jefferson on what started as the Gulfslide but seemed much lower than the usual route. There were snowshoe tracks all the way to the summit and the temps and winds were very mild.

We then took the Great Gulf Trail over the shoulder of Mt. Clay and pressed on to Washington. The summit was pretty packed and trail conditions were beginning to deteriorate as a result of so much foot traffic. Descending Washington to Crawford there was a mix of tracks from crampons, microspikes, and snowshoes. We switched over to crampons juts before crossing the ice field, which was far less treacherous today than it was the Tuesday before last. Once we arrived at the hut we switched back to snowshoes and made our way down the Ammo.

Recommended Equipment:
We wore snowshoes for the majority of the hike. Light traction or full crampons are advised for crossing the icy area before the hut. A lot of people had sunburns today form the cloudless sky and reflected UV rays off the snow. Sunscreen or a UV blocking neck gator would be a good idea under these conditions.

Comments:
It was an amazing day to be out. The winds were never very strong and the temps were downright warm at times. A huge thanks the SA and HA for meeting up with Dehydrator and me. Bluebird skies and some incredible views.
