Jennings and Noon Peaks 12/30/07

Date: 12/30/07

Route: Ascend Noon, Jennings Peaks via Sandwich Mt Trail
descend via Drakes Brook Trail

Conditions: Conditions at trailhead elevation 1400' were crusted snow so I opted to snowshoe rather than BC Ski. Trail was packed out nicely, with few inches of recently deposited crusted snow on top of a consolidated packed trail. Only encountered one other person with his dog on the trail who started out ahead of me on the trail the whole day. Drakes Brook only had limited ice bridging, but still crossable. Crusting ranged from dissapeared to intermittant at 3000'+.

Equipment: Could have bare booted, but I carried poles and wore snowshoes from Th to TH. Steel Crampons in snowshoes worked well kick stepping up the steep portions below Noon and Jennings summits. Put on my hooded goretex jacket on Noon Peak to evade snow down back.

Comments: This destination offers some awesome views for a destination so accessible from Boston area and I had them this day. I could see Mt Washington peaking (haha) though a cloud bank from time to time. Pleased to repeat this hike I did last winter with no views. The 0.2 mile to Jennings seems more like 0.5 mile. Maybe because it gets steep and traction is poor. I especially liked the romp down Drakes Brook Trail on my snowshoes. Such a delight to hike. Must come back again and again to explore the many other routes to Sandwich Mt.

Returned to TH with enough time to hop in car and explore the area around Tripoli Road and Osceola View Campground on my BC skis. As expected the crust was horrible to ski on, but Tripoli Road is nice.
