Jennings Peak via Sandwich Mt. Trail/Drakes Brook Trails
Date of Hike: Sat 6/26
Trail Conditions: Dry, easy and with surprisingly minimal bugs until 3 pm. Stream crossings were rock-hoppable but when crossing on Sandwich Mt. Trail, the rocks were slippery and one of our party fell, tumbled over and lost his sunglasses - fortunately nothing else banged up except his pride.
Special Equipment Required: DEET definitely needed as a preventative. We lathered up at the start and saw nary a bug until a few arrived after our lunch at 1 pm - and then they began descending at 3 pm, as we were done.
Comments: Optional - Nice views esp. at the 1.6 mi point up Sandwich Mtn Trail (?summit of Noon Mountain?) Our first hike of the season, intentionally picked as a gentle training hike and at 6.5 mi/2150' gain, that is was. Doing Drakes Brook Trail as the return is very easy though viewless.
We passed a couple who started with us and by the time we summitted Jennings, they had already gone the additional 1.2 mi to Sandwich Mtn. AND BACK - and considering the woman had the beautifully hairless head of someone recently in chemo, we were exceptionally impressed, and send anonymous warm wishes and good karma to them.
