Katahdin: Baxter and Hamlin peaks, via Saddle Trail, AT and Hamlin Ridge Trail
8/8/12
Trail Conditions: We had camped at Chimney Pond, and climbed Katahdin via the Saddle Trail. The top .2 mi. was a steep slide, but the footing is stable. Trail was dry with good footing. The trail up to Baxter and over to Hamlin was dry, with well-placed rocks for easy alpine travel. The descent via the Hamlin Ridge Trail was via a path over via a steep spine of the ridge over large and rough glacial boulders. Safe footing, but slow to travel.
Comments: Alpine zone, some flowers still in bloom. Baxter was crowded, but we had Hamlin to ourselves. The spring up near Hamlin was running almost dry.
