I would be interested in location suggestions for a trip to kayak to a trail , then hike to a summit of a reasonable 'hill'?

moosehead to mount kineo

Paddling Moosehead lake to Mt.Kineo (even has a primitive camp site) comes to mind.

bigelow range

Further map checking ... looks like the bigelow peaks are reachable by trail from the flagstaff lake. </monolog>

On the north shore of Attean Pond in Jackman, ME, there is a trail to Sally Mountain. It was fairly conspicuous and near a couple of primitive campsites. We did not hike this mountain ... after all, our destination was the Moose River Bow Trip and the 1 1/2 mile portage between Attean and Holeb Ponds meant 4 trips = 10 miles "hiking" after less than six miles paddling. The trail is about two miles from the Attean Landing launch and crosses the RR line so that would be another route for access ... but watch out! it's an active line.

Lobster Lake, near Moosehead Lake, has several primitive campsites and a trailhead to Lobster Mountain. Haven't been there yet but am planning a trip to include this hike and a paddle down the West Branch at the end of August.

We've scouted out Flagstaff Lake and the landing and trailhead to the Bigelow Range, which is also accessible by vehicle. We plan to do that, probably in October, with a base camp at Flagstaff Lake Hut where I believe they have kayaks or canoes available.

The northeast part of Squam Lake in NH is a comparatively undeveloped area on a comparatively peaceful lake with a trailhead at Five Fingers Point to Rattlesnake Mountain which also has a trailhead across from the parking lot to Morgan/Percival.

Interesting question ... combining a hike with a paddle, especially one exclusively accessible by boat ... is always in my mind as I look over maps and guides. Please let us know whatever else you find.

exactly my thinking

I am a hiker and a paddler. Lot of times on a trip there appears to be plenty of exercise for the upper body but none for the legs. I'll let you know what else I find.

I wasn't sure about a trail to Lobster Mountain. A few years ago we camped on Lobster Pond and it was one of those unforgetable trips. I'm looking forward to going there again.

One can paddle Cranberry Lake in the ADKs to Cat Mountain... Probably a goldmine in the ADKs to paddle to a small hill, pick up the ADK paddler's map to find many more possibilities...

One can also do Whiteface Mtn from Connery Landing (?) but that might not qualify as a "hill" :)

Yes, like Jay said there are lots of opportunities in the Adirondacks, though it sounds like you're not so interested in that neck of the woods. If you are, however, shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to provide some suggestions!

Jim and I plan on doing on the Flagstaff Lake paddle/Bigelow hike some time in September. We are also looking for other paddle/hikes in Maine. Looking to avoid portages. We paddled around Moosehead lake several years ago but did not hike Mt Kineo. The lake was very calm when we started out in the early AM but by the afternoon the wind had picked up and the lake was quite choppy. I anticipate the same conditions on Flagstaff.

Moosehead could be tricky

There were a few times I got caught on it on my return trip when I was thankful not to be in a canoe. Waves can get quite high on this lake.
