Kearsarge North Mountain via Kearsarge North Trail
Date of Hike: Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008
Trail Conditions: Ice, Frozen granular, bare ground, mud, wet granular
Special Equipment Required: Traction required to make it to the summit...Stablicers not enough.
Comments:
What a hodgepodge of conditions! Lots of bare ground/mud down low and up the first sustained ascent. All ice from there on up to the top. Just barely made it wearing my Stablicers - lost my grip at one point and slid 15 feet downhill into the woods, head first!
Ice had melted off the surface at 2,500 or so and below on the return trip.
Trail is well packed (up high, one can stay on top of unbroken snow even, due to the thick ice). Snowshoes unnecessary until next snow storm - siginifcant bare spots down low and on ledges.
Quasi-brook crossings no problem, though snowbridges are gone.
