As mentioned by Wolfgang below the trail up Kearsarge is in very good condition. In fact I've never seen it any better be it summer, fall, winter or spring. For a hiker it is indeed the equivalent of an Interstate. Under the hemlocks, the trail gave the appearance of being 'sanded' by the needles from the trees. The open ledges are still covered with snow and the trail is actually easier to follow there then when the rocks are bare.
The ice above the ledges which at this time of year is often very difficult to cross, is totally covered by snow and not a factor. There are a couple of ledges near the top that usually require a bit of scrambling, but today it was difficult to tell where they were. You simply go up the trail in the snow. At least as late as noon, snowshoes were not necessary. I used stableicers all day.
There is a bit of bare rock at the top. More than likely they are bare because of the wind and not because of melting.
It was good running into Wolfgang. It's been some time since we last crossed paths. It usually happens to us on Pleasant Mt. Had a nice talk also with Steve Smith from the Mt. Wanderer book shop in Lincoln.
We originally planned to go up Cabot today, but it was just too beautiful a day for Cabot. With the unlimited views there could hardly have been a more beautiful spot than the top of Kearsage. The fire tower on the top, the only one left in the WMNF, was frosting on the cake.
