My first time in King Ravine and it didn't disappoint. The unseasonably warm weather didn't hurt, either.
Trails: All trails in fine shape: Sylvan Way, Amphibrach, King Ravine, Gulfside, Spur, Randolph, Short Line. The few crossings were easy (Cold Brook Fall) or bridged (Sanders Bridge). Lower trails completely covered in leaves, but the trailbed is obvious. Subway (not trivial to find blazes) and Ice Caves (no ice!?) are worth it. The headwall was actually fun, as I didn't get tired - you have to go slow while picking your way on all fours up the boulder path. But, like the good book says, I wouldn't want to descend it. Very breezy at the Gateway. I almost got blown over while perched on a rock taking panorama shots. Don't miss the Knight's Castle viewpoint above Crag Camp.
Equipment: bareboot (Stabilicers went unused)
Comments: Due to L'Action de grâce holiday weekend, Québecois outnumbered Anglophones at least two to one.
Also, it amazes me how dense the trail network is in this area. Shortly before King Ravine merged with Short Line, I found myself walking parallel with another hiker 20 feet to my left. It was 50 yards before our trails merged.
