Trails: Gordon Pond, Kinsman Ridge, Reel Brook
Miles: 11.1, trailhead to trailhead.
Time: 6:40
No. of people seen: Two.
Conditions: Mud, and plenty of it. Most of the muddy bogs can be negotiated at the edges, however; I stepped in up to my boot tops just once. The first crossing of Gordon Pond Brook was a bit of a challenge due to high water; I crossed about 15 yards downstream from the usual trail crossing and kept my boots dry.
Special equipment: My walking staff was useful for the several stream crossings and the mud negotiations. Bug juice. Rain gear.
Comments: The Gordon Pond Trail is a wonderful back-way to reach Kinsman Ridge -- the climb to the junction with the Kinsman Ridge Trail is just 1,800 vertical feet over five miles. Gordon Pond itself, near the top of the trail, is a lovely little lake. But following the first couple of miles of the GPT is challenging due to lots of intersections and overlaps with snowmobile trails. The AMC White Mountain Guide's directions are accurate, however. I referred to them (and my map) several times in the hike's first hour.
