Mr. Kineo ( a preview of what is ahead)
It was certainly a white mtn weekend, which is great! I was supposed to hike Saturday, but time constraints did not allow this. Though I was able to play in Kinsman Notch a little, and get a couple shots along the pond, though they were a bit grainy for some reason.
looks like a steep trail
And a nice 5 foot drift
And now, onto Three Ponds
I've never hiked Three Ponds in the winter, so off we went. I figured there wouldn't be much peace and quiet due to snowmobiles, but oh well. So off we went, that is, after we got stuck in the parking lot with a less than adequate snow car. So then we parked on the road....
We brought snowshoes, but the vast majority of the trail was snowmobile packed down! I had every intention of breaking through whatever I could, but there really wasn't all that much to break.
Open area of Sucker Brook
Come on let's go!
Up at the main pond
We walked across the pond, then cut back over the beaver dam (which was an adventure in and of itself) and then off to the donkey hill cutoff, which we had to break. There was a short cross country ski trail that ended at one point.
We did break a small section of the donkey hill cutoff, but then the snowmobile trail provided a much easier, and more scenic route along one of the ponds that provided an awesome view of Mt Kineo.
Now down along the snowmobile trail area on another pond.
I was looking for the hiking trail, and then found it pretty easily, so we started breaking it again, but then it came back out to the snowmobile track again. So at that point, we just said screw it, and followed that path for awhile.
