Planning on taking the wife on her first over night trip soon. Only problem is it will be on a Saturday night. How early should I get to either Kinsman Pond or Nauman (havn't figured which one yet) to secure a tent plarform? thanks

My impression, and I may be wrong, is that Nauman (sp?) is a significantly more popular location due to its location and accessibility. I would say as late as 4pm ought to get you a tentsite at Kinsman Pond (the through-hikers tend to stay in the shelter, not tent). Dave - what'chu think?

We had to send two rabbits ahead of our group last summer to secure a tent site by 2:00 PM on Saturday at Kinsman. All it took was one large group of Boy Scouts to completely fill up the shelter. There were two overflow groups and I'm not sure if others moved on.

I hiked Kinnsman 2 weeks ago and stayed at the kinnsman pound site, we arrived at about 1pm and and got the last overflow site. The Care taker mentioned there was a alot of traffic to the site lately. Leave early if you are able.

Been my experience that Kinsman sees a ton of use (esp. Saturdays) in the summer months. I have been in Dave's position as well, needing to send two hikers along to get tent platforms for groups I was co-leading. I would also say that by 2:00pm on Saturdays it is pretty good bet all platforms will be taken.

At Nauman, I would say it is pretty common for folks to get to the tentsites fairly early in the AM, establish their camp, then day hike over to Pierce, Eisenhower, even Monroe or even the other way to Jackson.

On Saturday, at these two places, the earlier the better.

Peace.

Brian:

If K. Pond is full you can hike about a mile and a half down Mt. Kinsman trail to Bald Knob and camp on the ledges or back in the small trees there, a better spot in my estimation anyway. Get your water before hitting the spur path (Kinsman Flume crosses main trail right there and there is a little rock hop to the ledges).

De nada,

Gris
