trails: lonesome lake trail, fishin jimmy trail, kinsman ridge trail, rim trail, ski trails

conditions: started out with dry trail heading up to lonesome lake, but patchy snow and ice started roughly half way to the lake and became pretty continous to the hut. the same beyond on fishin jimmy to start with more substantial ice at times through the many small ups and downs. once on the climb it's a mix of packed snow and ice with some significant bulges. one required a bypass. the ridge was in nice shape to south kinsman with mostly packed snow with some monorail and very little exposed ice. heading to cannon was again a mix of packed snow, monorail and postholes with ice interspersed. the final ascent to cannon had one section of major ice that required a short bushwack to get around, but otherwise we were able to find good traction most of the way. leaving cannon for mittersill there was snow on the taft trail that petered out heading up mittersill. some snow down to the lift, but little to none after that down to the base. minor water crossings on fishin jimmy were either frozen or stepped across.

equipment: we put on microspikes a few minutes before lonesome lake and wore them until just below the ski lift on mittersill. we carried crampons, but did not use them. had we been descending some of the trail sections we were going up we may have used them and i would suggest carrying them for this route just in case.

comments: great day for this hike. cool temps and a steady wind kept things comfortable. nice views with increasing clouds over the course of the day. nice seeing tim m. along the way. thanks to cynthia for a great day.
