North and South Kinsman via Lonesome Lake, Fishin' Jimmy, Kinsman Ridge Trail

BikeHikeSkiFish (Tim), Marc Howes, Enapai (Dave)

Date of Hike: 08-Feb-2007

Trail Conditions: New powder, from 12" down low, to 16"-24" high on Fishin' Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge Trail. Route is packed out now all the way to South Kinsman. There are nearly 60" of snow at the ruler at the hut. That's FIVE FEET. There are sporadic blowdowns, lean-overs, and the annoying low branches which come with the trail being raised up 4-6 feet above summer levels. We ran into one other group of three, claiming to hit North only. Snowshoes with tails (MSRs) or Atlas 10+30 were worn the entire day.

Lonesome Lake is a packed out super-highway. Fishin' Jimmy and above are packed enough to leave your MSR tails at home, or they were when we finished.

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes. Crampons weren't necessary, and shouldn't be any time soon.

Comments: Fairly warm day. Light wind. No views until back down to the lake, and driving south on 93 (2:30-ish)

Round trip time: 7:10.
